Introduction

Amps/Cabinets

  • Guitar amp: Marshall model 1959 100 watt guitar amplifier head
  • Guitar cabinet(s): Marshall 1960A cabinet; 4 x 12" Celestion speakers, angled front.

During the 1978 3 week tour of the USA, Andy mentions that he brought his Echoplex with him from England, but rented the Marshall cabinets. One can assume that means he rented the Marshall model 2203 100 watt amplifier head and the 1960A Marshall 4x12 cabinets in NYC, to start the tour playing at CBGB's, and then for the rest of the 3 weeks tour.

Andy appears to have started to play with The Police using the Marshall amplifier and cabinet setup; there's no reference of him using the Fender Twin Reverb amp he used with Neil Diamond in previous years. It is unknown whether he used the 100 watt or 50 watt version of the Marshall amp in England at this time.

Most photos and videos show Andy using the Marshall amp setup on stage always. He graduated to using 2 full 100 watt amplifier heads and 2 1960A cabinets as The Police toured later in 1979 and 1980.

Guitars

It is unusual to find a 1961 Telecaster with a maple neck, as at the time, Fender was concentrating on building all their guitars with a rosewood fretboard over a maple neck. Andy's guitar appears to have the one piece style neck as used on the 1950's Fender guitars, however, there's no reliable photo to show that it may be a maple neck with a maple fretboard, as was done on rare occasion when a customer ordered it that way. Andy claims to have purchased the guitar this way used from a student in LA when he lived there before returning to England in the mid 1970's.
