"Don't Care" is a song written by Klark Kent and recorded by Klark Kent in 1977.

About the song

Stewart Copeland wrote this song on 1977-01-28. That demo would eventually be released on the Klark Kent bonus CD in 2023.

The Police rehearsed and recorded it on 1977-02-02. Apparently Sting didn't want to sing every song Stewart wrote - that's why Klark Kent had to be invented.

Stewart recorded the backing track at Surrey Sound Studios on 1977-12-16, the vocals were done on 1977-12-17.

The 7" was first released on Stewart Copeland's own label Kryptone Records in early June 1978, then A&M picked it up fast and already re-released it on 1978-07-17. It was so successful that Klark Kent even appeared on Top Of The Pops on 1978-08-30 - with Andy Summers and Sting as a part of his backing band.

The cover photo was taken by Lawrence Impey on 1977-09-25 at Sting's apartment. The black face mask was painted.

Personnel

All instruments including the typewriter were played by Klark Kent. The engineer was Nigel Grey (i.e. Nigel Gray).

I am the hottest thing you ever will see
You know I'm something it ain't easy to be
I am the neatest thing that ever hit town
There isn't anything that could bring me down

Don't care
If you really wanna hang around
Don't care
'Cause I am the neatest thing in town
Don't care
If you really wanna stick around
I don't care
If you even wanna put me down

The girls are always trying to settle me down
They never guess I'm only fooling around
My only worry is my humility
It dampens all my heavy artillery

Don't care
If you really wanna hang around
Don't care
'Cause I am the neatest thing in town
Don't care
If you really wanna stick around
I don't care
If you even wanna put me down

Don't care no no
Don't care no no
Don't care no no
Don't care no no

You know I'm fooling with my fake ID
So you don't need to check my history
You know I'm something it ain't easy to be
There isn't anyone who I'd rather be

Don't care
If you really wanna hang around
Don't care
'Cause I am the neatest thing in town
Don't care
If you really wanna stick around
I don't care
If you even wanna put me down

Don't care no no
'Cause I am the neatest thing in town
Don't care if you really wanna stick around
I don't care if you even wanna put me down
