Lyrics

There were rooms of forgiveness
In the house that we share
But the space has been emptied
Of whatever was there
There were cupboards of patience
There were shelf loads of care
But whoever came calling
Found nobody there
After today, consider me gone

Roses have thorns and shining waters mud
And cancer lurks deep in the sweetest bud
Clouds and eclipses stain the moon and the sun
And history reeks of the wrongs we have done
After today, consider me gone

I've spent too many years at war with myself
The doctor has told me it's no good for my health
To search for perfection is all very well
But to look for heaven is to live here in hell

After today, consider me gone

Quotations and trivia

Sting recorded a demo for this song in 1980 with the intention of using to record it for Zenyatta Mondatta. Nigel Gray commented that too many of Sting's demos sounded like a nightclub band (probably also referring to Demolition Man, I Burn For You and Shadows In The Rain, which didn't sound like The Police at all). The first two of these songs were given to other artists and eventually recorded by The Police a year later. Shadows In The Rain was completely reconstructed. Consider Me Gone didn't see the light of day until Sting worked on his first solo album.

(On a rarely spread recording of some of Sting's Zenyatta demos the jazzy version of "Shadows In The Rain" is wrongly labelled as "Consider Me Gone"... maybe Nigel got his hands on this and didn't check further before his book interview...)
