On 2008-06-05, The New York Times published a story announcing that the final Police concert would take place on 2008-08-07 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. According to the announcement, "A $5,000 donation will get the V.I.P. treatment — dinner, a party, attendance at a sound check — while $150 will secure a pair of tickets."

Tickets would be sold during a PBS pledge-drive on 2008-06-14.

The announcement was met by a flurry of reactions from fans. While relieved to finally know the date of the final show, many expressed concern over the manner in which ticket sales would be handled.[1] On ThePolice.com, Police HQ reacted testily when criticized that the news was announced first through the New York Times and not the fan club.[2]
