"Shadows In The Rain" is a song written by Sting and recorded by The Police in 1980.

About the song
Sting recorded the demo for this song in Dublin in the summer of 1980. It's very similar to his solo version from The Dream Of The Blue Turtles. However it starts with all instruments (guitar / bass / drums) playing from the start - with the guitar playing what would become the keyboard part in the 1985 version. The demo version is even more swinging than the solo version and was a bit out of the "ordinary" The Police style (like Hole In My Life stood out on Outlandos d'Amour).
So while recording Zenyatta Mondatta The Police felt they had to police-fy the swinging tune to something that sounds more like The Police. And then Sting changed it back to his original vision on his first solo album.
(No idea if there's a full version of his demo out there - the version I've heard is cut after the first chorus. So I can't say for sure if the lyrics, music or structure changed later in the song)
