"Truth Hits Everybody" is a song written by Sting and recorded by The Police in 1978.

About the song

This is one of the songs with most variations. It started as the Last Exit track Truth Kills, was recorded by The Police in 1977 (Matrix Studios, unreleased) and then again in 1978 (on Outlandos d'Amour). The Police performed a slow version of this track during some Reggatta concerts and even recorded a slow jam version in May 1981 (Surrey Sound Studios, unreleased). In 1983 the band recorded the remix version which was released as a b-side. There were rumours that the band would release another recording (from 2007-07-18) during their 2007/2008 reunion tour, but no new material surfaced.

Sleep lay behind me like a broken ocean
Strange waking dreams before my eyes unfold
You lay there sleeping like an open doorway
I stepped outside myself and felt so cold

Take a look at my new toy
It'll blow your head in two, oh boy

Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone
Oh, oh, oh
Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone
Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone

I thought about it and my dream was broken
I clutch at images like dying breath
And I don't want to make a fuss about it
The only certain thing in life is death

Alternative and cover versions

Alternative versions

This version is structurally very similar to the Outlandos d'Amour version we all know. But there are some interesting differences. The first thing you notice is that there are no "Wo-ho-ho"s in the whole song. Sting ends almost each line in the verses on a high note. He still did that during The Police's first US tour in October 1978, although the LP version had been recorded by then. Another difference is how - or better: when - "Truth" is sung in the chorus. On the LP version "Truth" is sung on "3" and "Hits" on "3and". On the 1977 version from Matrix Studios he sings "Truth" on "2and" and "Hits" on "3and".
