Background
"The Gene Pool" was originally commissioned by Ensemble Bash in 1994. The liner notes of the album Launch on which the song premiered lists the commission information as, "The Gene Pool: British Telecom for the 1995 BT/National Federation of Music Societies Education Artist Tour."
