Plot summary
Georgia "George" Lass, the central character of the series is a young college drop-out who lives a detached life from her family, has no real friends, nor any real interest in anything. Pushed by her mother, she applies at the Happy Time Temp Agency and begins work as a file clerk -- only to be killed on her first day in a freak accident by a toilet seat from the MIR space station. But instead of finding herself in the afterlife, she finds she has been appointed a new job after death: she is now one of the "Reapers".
As instructed by her new boss, Rube, she has found herself in this position due to unresolved issues in her life that leave her incapable of "moving on". Instead, she must help others make the transition from life to death, which is sometimes more complicated than it might seem. Sometimes souls are not ready to to move on, but interfering in the natural order of things can cause trouble with the "Gravelings" -- the creatures who orchestrate death.
Throughout the series George comes to accept her new life-after-death, while attempting indirectly to help her family cope with her passing. The series skirts the line between drama and dark-comedy with most episodes following the events of a single day and the particular assignments of the reaper crew.
