About the song
Sting wrote the song in October 1986. In mid-January 1987 he recorded a first version with Branford Marsalis and Dolette McDonald in New York - for the Kirin Can Beer commercials.
Bryan Loren post on facebook - August 11, 2015 · So we continue our trip down Memory Lane(Great song by the incomparable Minnie Riperton, co-written by my father. But, I digress)... For this, our second installment, we have Sting. With a song called, "We'll Be Together". This song was originally brought to me as a remix. Sting originally wrote and recorded the song to be the background for, believe it or not, a Japanese beer commercial. As the story goes, they needed a song with the word 'together' in it. Later, as Sting was finishing the album "Nothing Like The Sun", it was decided that this song would be the lead single, hence needing a remix. The masters were sent to me over at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood, Ca. It was there that, upon putting up and listening to 64 tracks of tape I decided, this was not something I could remix. I would have to build it again from scratch. To his credit, Sting did not really seem to mind, while others(manager, record company) were not so comfortable. But, I did then begin putting together what would become this record. While building the drum sequence, I actually sampled a Stuart Copland(drummer for The Police) snare drum from a Police record(right off the CD) to be the main back-beat. As a drummer myself, I've always loved Stuart's sharp, snappy sound. I used the late, great Vesta Williams and another powerful singer by the name of Renee Geyer to replace the original background vocals, which I felt lacked energy. Sting requested that I use the guitar parts from the original version, which were performed by Eric Clapton. But I felt his parts were to tame for what I was creating, so I played those, keyboards and bass guitar myself. I used the saxophone parts from the original version, which were performed by the great Branford Marsalis. And Sting was a great sport as I fed him vocal ad libs that he was uncomfortable with, but went with me anyway…
