"Truth Hits Everybody (remix)" is a song written by Sting and recorded by The Police on 1983-05-16.

About the song

Although it's named "remix" this song is actually a re-recording of the 1978 original. The Police toyed with this song a lot. They played the normal fast version for a few years before experimenting with a much slower tempo. In May 1981 they jammed at Surrey Sound Studios with the plan to record a b-side for an upcoming single. Again they played a slower version, not unlike this version which appeared as a b-side in 1983.

This "remix" was recorded at Marcus Recording Studios in London on 1983-05-16. The Police did two takes - the second one was released as a 7" single b-side in 1983.

The song was left of the Message In A Box set and made its first CD appearance on the Every Move You Make: The Studio Recordings / Flexible Strategies compilation in 2018. It's also featured on the Synchronicity box set that was released on 2024-07-26 - including with the first take they recorded on 1983-05-16.

Personnel

Stewart Copeland doesn't remember playing it. Jeff Seitz thinks that the drum sounds are from a Synclavier, which was Sting's preferred choice of instrument in later years - but in 1983 it might as well have been an Oberheim DMX (Stewart used a Fairlight). The guitar part doesn't quite sound like it's Andy...

Sleep lay behind me like a broken ocean
Strange waking dreams before my eyes unfold
You lay there sleeping like an open doorway
I stepped outside myself and felt so cold

Take a look at my new toy
It'll blow your head in two, oh boy

Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone
Oh, oh, oh
Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone
Truth hits everybody
Truth hits everyone

I thought about it and my dream was broken
I clutch at images like dying breath
And I don't want to make a fuss about it
The only certain thing in life is death
