About the song
Sting wrote the song in October 1986. In mid-January 1987 he recorded a first version with Branford Marsalis and Dolette McDonald in New York - for the Kirin Can Beer commercials.
The song was then recorded for ...Nothing Like The Sun at AIR Studios - with Eric Clapton on guitar.
As it was chosen to be the album's first single release, the masters were sent to producer Bryan Loren at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood for a remix. But when listening to the song, Bryan decided the 64 tracks of tape were not something he could remix, so he would build his version from scratch.
For the drum sequence's main back-beat he used a Stewart Copeland snare sound straight from a The Police CD (from Every Breath You Take). He re-recorded the backing vocals with René Gayer and Vesta Williams as he felt the original backing vocals lacked energy.
Sting requested to keep the Eric Clapton guitar parts from the original recording. But again producer Bryan Loren felt that those were too tame for the new version of this song. So he re-corded guitar, bass and keyboards himself. About the only thing he did keep from the original version were Branford Marsalis' saxophone parts.
Sting also re-recorded his vocals.
The original AIR Studios version was used as a b-side on 12" singles and a CD-single - it was called "previous version" and lasted 4:28 minutes. It was also released on the 1994 Best Of compilation Fields Of Gold: The Best Of Sting 1984-1994 - lasting 3:51 minutes.
