"Mother" is a song written by Andy Summers and recorded by The Police in 1982 / 1983.

About the song

There's an early mix from AIR Studios, which has the structure and basic instrumentation as the LP version. This version features additional synth drums before the first beat the LP version starts with. Andy then produces a funny sound with his voice, there's no oboe yet in this intro.

This early version features a completely different vocal take by Andy. His singing on the LP version is way more "crazy".

There's no wind instrument in later verses (I'm not sure if what's on the LP is a saxophone or the oboe again).

In this early version Andy plays some Fripp-style melodies over the final screaming parts.

As Hugh Padgham remembers in Studio Sound from March 1984 they eventually used Andy's vocal track from his original demo for the LP version.

Well the telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone
The telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone
The telephone is screaming
Won't she leave me alone
The telephone is ringing
Is that my mother on the phone

Well every girl that I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end
Every girl I go out with
Becomes my mother in the end
Well, I hear my mother calling
But I don't need her as a friend

Oh oh mother
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me
Oh women please have mercy
Let this poor boy be
Oh mother dear please listen
And don't devour me
