Introduction

The first Werchter festival took place in 1975. On 1977-07-06 and 1977-07-07 the first double festival Torhout-Werchter took place. In just a few years the number of visitors rose from 5,000 to 65,000 and 100,000 in 1984. From 1999 Torhout is dropped and the festival is no longer a double festival.
